MEMPHIS, Tennessee --- The Belz Museum of Asian & Judaic Art will hold its annual Chinese New Year art competition, "A Rat Show for the New Year." The contest is open to any student currently in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Because 2008 is the Year of the Rat in the zodiac, student drawings or paintings should incorporate a rat with Chinese symbolism. Please see the entry form for complete rules and directions.
The deadline for entries is January 19, 2008, and they should be delivered to the museum by this date. All entries will be displayed at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library located at 3030 Poplar Avenue in Memphis. There, the public is encouraged to vote on its favorite pieces. The popular entries will then be presented at the Belz Museum's annual Family Day on February 16, 2008, where a panel of special guest judges will decide the final winning entries.
Winners will be chosen from four categories based upon age. In addition to receiving prizes, the winners will have their pieces displayed at the Belz Museum during the Chinese New Year. All students who enter the contest are welcome to attend Family Day where they can receive discounted admission, participate in crafts, and learn about the fascinating culture of China. More information about Family Day 2008 can be found here.
