 | Temple Shizi Guardian Lion with Stand
Qing Dynasty, Daoguang Reign (1821-1850)
Cloisonne
83 1/4" H.-44.4426
Placed before one of the principal entrances of the Forbidden City in Beijing, these stylized animals are based on interpretations of West Asian, especially Persian, art forms. Typically depicted in pairs, the male has a ball under one paw-probably a pearl while the female(shown) holds a cub under her right paw. Rank can be indicated through the number of "bumps" on the lions head.
