Title: Musicians of Safed
Artist: Reuven Rubin (1893-1974)
Oil on canvas
72" x 48"-37.8598

Reuven Rubin is one of Israel’s most revered artists of the first half of the Twentieth Century. He became part of the School of Paris artists and also studied in Palestine. He is widley known for his depictions of landscapes of Israel and its local subjects. Rubin was born in Rumania and settled in Tel Aviv in 1922. He was facinated by the local inhabitants and the sense of holiness of his chosen country. The people he saw would capture his imagination and became the subjects of this paintings for the years to come.

The New York Times reviewer for Rubin’s 1962 Wilderstein Gallery exhibition, in which ‘Musicians of Safed’ was included, wrote “These eloquently lyrical paintings of Israel’s landscape, traditions and inhabitants reflect fantasy and color and convey forty years of a gifted artist who can justly be considered Israel’s greatest living artist” (in S. Wilkinson Rubin, New York, 1973, p.92)
